• Kim Jong-Un says nukes are a ‘deterrent’ against ‘US imperialists’

North Korean President Kim Jong Un said his regime’s nuclear weapons serve as a “powerful deterrent” against the “US imperialists” and downplayed the effects of punishing United Nations’ sanctions by claiming the economy has continued to grow.

The despot addressed the “complicated international situation ” at a meeting of the Central Committee of the ruling Workers’ Party, according to state-run media on Sunday, by saying the nukes are a “powerful deterrent firmly safeguarding the peace and security in the Korean peninsula and Northeast Asia” against the “protracted nuclear threats of the U.S. imperialists , ” Reuters reported.

He also said North Korea’s policy of “byungjin,” referring to the parallel development of nuclear weapons and the economy, was “absolutely right,” the news service reported.

“The national economy has grown on their strength this year, despite the escalating sanctions,” said Kim, referring to UN Security Council ‘s sanctions imposed in retaliation for Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs.

Kim’s comments come as Trump cryptically tweeted on Saturday about decades of failure by previous administrations in getting the regime to curtail its weapons program.

“Presidents and their administrations have been talking to North Korea for 25 years, agreements made and massive amounts of money paid … hasn’t worked, agreements violated before the ink was dry, makings fools of U.S. negotiators,” Trump posted on Twitter. “Sorry, but only one thing will work!”

Later, when asked by reporters to elaborate, he only said: “You’ll figure that out pretty soon.”

North Korea has been test-firing intercontinental ballistic missiles with the range to hit the US mainland and last month detonated a nuclear device.

A Russian lawmaker who visited Pyongyang said North Korea’s efforts to develop a nuclear-tipped missile is quickly advancing, according to reports. Trump has said he would “totally destroy” North Korea in defense of the US or its allies.
